Vivah Muhurat — The Astrological View and Auspicious Nakshatras
Choosing the muhurat is considered very important in a Hindu wedding. A wedding at the right muhurat brings the couple a happy, prosperous and long life. Astrology looks at the following when fixing a muhurat.
Auspicious tithis
Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dwadashi and Trayodashi are auspicious for weddings. Chaturthi, Ashtami, Navami, Chaturdashi and Amavasya should be avoided.
Auspicious nakshatras
Rohini — the best, Mrigashira — second best, Uttara Phalguni — especially auspicious, Hasta — auspicious, Chitra — beautiful, Swati — excellent, Uttarashadha — superior, Uttara Bhadrapada — auspicious, Revati — auspicious.
Auspicious days
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are auspicious. Tuesday and Saturday are best avoided.
Times to avoid
Bhadra, Rahu kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika kaal — wedding rites should not be done at these times. Weddings are also avoided in Adhik maas, during ashauch (ritual impurity) and when Jupiter or Venus is combust.
Kundli milan
In the Ashtakoot method 36 gunas are matched — Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7), Nadi (8). At least 18 gunas must match.
Mangal dosha
If either the bride or the groom has mangal dosha, it should ideally be present in both kundlis. If not, the wedding can take place after a Navagraha shanti.
