Shravan Month — The Importance of Shiv Puja, Fasting and Rudrabhishek
Shravan is considered the holiest month in Hinduism. In this month Lord Shiva and Parvati bestow special grace.
Why Shravan matters
The Skanda Purana describes the month of Shravan in detail. It was in this month that Shankar drank the poison from the churning of the ocean — which is why cooling offerings such as milk and water are made to him.
Shravan Mondays
Every Monday, visit a Shiva temple and offer jalabhishek. Offer bilva leaves, white flowers and dhatura. Those fasting may eat fruit, sabudana and sweet potato.
Rudrabhishek
Rudrabhishek on a Shravan Monday brings special merit. Panchamrit — milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar — is poured over the Shivling in order. Rudrabhishek with the Rudrashtadhyayi path, the "ॐ नमः शिवाय" jap and the Mahamrityunjay jap removes all illness, doshas and troubles.
Vrat routine
Rise before sunrise, bathe, visit the Shiva temple, fast through the day and do Shiv puja again in the evening.
