Pitru Paksha Shraddha
Tarpan for ancestors — a sacred rite to honour them
About this puja
Shraddha performed during Pitru Paksha brings peace to the souls of the ancestors and earns their blessings. Its main rites are pind daan, tarpan, feeding Brahmins and giving charity. Pinds are balls of sesame and rice offered to the ancestors on kusha grass. Gaya shraddha, Tripindi shraddha and Nandi shraddha are special forms. When a family has pitru dosha — untimely deaths, marriages not getting settled, no children — shraddha should certainly be performed. Remembering the ancestors keeps the family’s traditions alive.
