Gudi Padwa — An Auspicious Start to the New Year and a Beautiful Festival of Tradition

Gudi Padwa is the first day of the Marathi new year. It is celebrated on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, and in every home in Maharashtra the year begins with new hope, enthusiasm and positivity. The day is not just a festival but the start of new resolutions and a joyful life.

On Gudi Padwa it is traditional to rise early, clean the house and draw a beautiful rangoli in the courtyard. In many homes people take an abhyang snan (oil bath). Then the gudi is raised near the entrance of the house. The gudi is a symbol of victory and auspiciousness. It is made with a silk cloth on a bamboo stick, a garland of flowers, sugar garlands (gathi) and a silver or copper pot on top. It is raised high on the right side of the house, which is believed to bring positive energy into the home.

There is a tradition of eating neem and jaggery on this day — a symbolic message that life brings both sweet and bitter experiences, and that we accept both. In some places a mixture of neem leaves, jaggery, cumin and tamarind is eaten as prasad. There are health reasons behind it too, as neem is considered good for the body at the start of summer.

Gudi Padwa is also considered auspicious for starting new work. Many families start a new business, decide to buy a house or make important resolutions on this day. In some places the panchang is read aloud, giving the year's planetary positions, festivals, seasons and important muhurats — which makes it a good day to plan the year ahead.

Even in today's busy life, the true meaning of Gudi Padwa is spending time with family, thinking positively and preparing the mind for a new beginning. Celebrating with a simple puja at home, offering naivedya to God and taking the blessings of elders makes the start of the year even more auspicious.
