Meaning
This Marathi aarti by the poet Mukteshwar is to Mahalakshmi of Kolhapur (Karveer); it is sung at Lakshmi Puja in Diwali, on Fridays and during Navratri.
Refrain: Victory to you, Goddess Mahalakshmi. In every form, gross and subtle, you pervade everything.
1. Dweller of Karveer (Kolhapur), mother of gods and sages, giver of boons even to Shiva and beloved wife of Vishnu. Brahma was born from the lotus of his navel. Even thousand-headed Shesha cannot finish singing your virtues.
2. In your hands are the citron, mace and shield, and you shine like the sun's rays; a golden bowl of nectar gleams in your hand. With a jewelled girdle, colourful garments, eyes like a deer's and a face like the moon, you are the mother of Madana, the god of love.
3. You are Tara, the unreachable power, and Gauri of Shiva's devotees. The Sankhya school calls you Prakriti without attributes. You are the seed of the Gayatri and the essence of the Vedas and scriptures; you appear as Padmavati to those who follow dharma.
4. O river full of nectar, wash away sin and sorrow. Destroy the wicked demons and carry us across this hard worldly life. Lift the veil of illusion from those who bow to you and show them your form of pure consciousness.
5. If Brahma has written lines of bad karma on my forehead, Mother, wipe them away beneath your feet. O daughter of the Ocean of Milk, Mukteshwar washes your feet with flowers.
