Meaning

The Marathi aarti of Goddess Ambabai (Tulja Bhavani / Jagadamba) sung every day of Navratri, from Ghatasthapana to Dasara. Each verse describes one day of Navratri; the cry "Udo bola udo" (Glory, glory!) is sung after every verse.

1. (Day 1, Pratipada) In the bright half of Ashvin, Amba takes her throne. On the first day the ghat (sacred pot) is installed, her mantra is chanted and guardians are placed around; Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva themselves worship the Mother.
Refrain: Sing the glory of Mother Ambabai; everyone roars "Udo!" — how can her greatness be described?
2. (Day 2) The sixty-four yoginis gather; greatest of all is the mother of Parashurama. With musk on the forehead and sindoor in the parting, all the Chamundas cry her glory.
3. (Day 3) Amba is adorned — tilak, sari, blouse, a pearl necklace, pendants and a yellow silk garment; the eight-armed Mother looks radiant.
4. (Day 4) The Mother who pervades the universe looks kindly on her devotees; even the gods bow down before the all-merciful, enchanting Mother of the world.
5. (Day 5) The Upanga-Lalita vow; Bhavani is praised with offerings, and at night devotees keep vigil with songs of God, filled with joy.
6. (Day 6) With torches in hand the devotees perform the gondhal (devotional folk dance). Offer her a single cowrie and she gives a pearl necklace; when they ask for alms (jogava) she blesses the whole family of devotees.
7. (Day 7) She dwells on Saptashrungi hill, worshipped with jasmine and chrysanthemum; when a devotee falls into trouble she catches him at once.
8. (Day 8) Seeing the eight-armed Narayani standing on the Sahyadri mountains, my heart was won; I surrendered to her and she cared for me like a mother.
9. (Day 9) The closing of the nine days — the Saptashati is recited, homa is offered and a feast of six tastes is offered; the priests are fed with her grace.
10. (Day 10, Dasara) Amba rides out on her lion with fierce weapons to cross the boundary (Simollanghan), slays Shumbha, Nishumbha and other demons in battle, and gives shelter at her feet to the poet Vipra Ramdas.
